Vimshottari Dasha · Timing

Which period are you in, and what does it ask of you?

Dasha is the most practical timing tool in Jyotish. Understanding your Mahadasha and Antardasha turns a vague sense of upheaval into something you can prepare for.

Dasha: the most practical timing tool in Jyotish

Dasha is the most practical timing tool in astrology, and understanding your Mahadasha and Antardasha turns a vague sense of upheaval into something you can prepare for. Vedic astrology tells you what your chart is about; dasha tells you when.

The Vimshottari dasha system divides a lifespan into periods governed in sequence by the nine grahas. A Mahadasha runs for a substantial stretch of years; within it, an Antardasha for a few years; within that, a Pratyantardasha for months. The planet running your period sets the theme — not as a sentence you are serving, but as the field of life that is currently open.

This is why the same decade feels effortless for one person and relentless for another. A period ruled by a planet you handle well tends to produce movement in areas connected to that planet's significations. A period you find difficult tends to ask for patience rather than force.

Life moves in planetary seasons

The practical value of a dasha reading is straightforward. It tells you what your current period is emphasising, what to lean into, what to postpone, and where a favourable window is likely to open. A period is not a punishment. Every planet carries benefic and challenging significations, and a period that is demanding in one area is often unusually generous in another.

The reading is about knowing which is which — so the demanding part can be planned for, and the open door can be used while it is still open.

How time is divided: three levels of period

A dasha reading works on all three levels, because events live at the level of the shortest period running at the time:

  • Mahadasha — the longest period, running for years and setting the broad theme of that phase of your life: its character, its opportunities and its underlying pressure.
  • Antardasha — a period of a few years within the Mahadasha that modifies its theme and often marks where change and progress become visible.
  • Pratyantardasha — the shortest level, running for months. Most concrete events — moves, decisions, beginnings — land here rather than at the larger levels.
  • Combined reading — all three are read together, since a period only makes complete sense in the context of the two longer ones running underneath it.

What people ask a dasha reading

Almost every question that stalls on "when?" belongs here:

  • A period that feels wrong — understanding why the last few years have been harder than expected, and what the current period is actually asking of you.
  • Transitions and new dashas — what to expect as a Mahadasha or Antardasha changes, so the shift feels like a phase rather than a shock.
  • Decisions and their windows — whether a job move, a launch, a property purchase or a relocation is better made now or held until the period supports it.
  • Timing of events — favourable windows for marriage, travel abroad, expansion and the milestones you are actively planning around.

A calendar, not a crystal ball

The session works backwards from the decisions in front of you. Together we look at which periods are running, what each one governs, and which of your open questions those periods can realistically answer. Where the timing matters — a job offer with a deadline, a business launch date, a wedding window — those are checked through KP so the dasha indication is confirmed at event level.

The output is a working document rather than a prediction: current Mahadasha, running Antardasha, Pratyantardasha windows, upcoming dasha changes, favourable start dates, and the periods best left for patience.

Dasha sessions near you

Sessions are held in person at the Borivali studio in Mumbai or online by phone and video call, six days a week by appointment. Because the reading is a conversation about specific decisions rather than a recital of a chart, it is worth allowing time to lay out the priorities in front of you.

Trusted by clients across Mumbai

Most clients arrive having already had a chart read, and asking the practical follow-up: given what my chart says, when should I act? The reading is the part that turns insight into scheduling — a launch that waits two months, a resignation that waits one, a wedding that moves to the next favourable window.

What you get, in plain terms

A dasha reading is summarised in four lines, and clients are told all four before anything else is discussed:

  • Prepared — know what the period asks before it arrives.
  • Timed — favourable windows identified, not vague guidance.
  • Practical — leads to decisions, not to waiting indefinitely.
  • Cross-checked — dasha for the window, KP for the event, Vedic for the underlying pattern.

Client Testimonials

I had been trying to launch for a year and could not understand why nothing stuck. The dasha reading showed me the period I was in and which months actually supported it. We moved the date by two months and the difference was immediate.

Vikram N.Lower Parel · Business launch

The best part was being told which period not to force anything. I had been pushing a relocation for two years. I waited, the window came, and it went smoothly the first time.

Priya A.Powai · Relocation

My chart reading gave me the picture; the dasha session gave me the calendar. Knowing my current Mahadasha and Antardasha has made the last eighteen months far less confusing than the last eighteen years.

Dasha astrology questions

It is the standard timing system in Jyotish. Your lifespan is divided into successive periods governed by the nine grahas in a fixed order, beginning from the Moon. A Mahadasha runs for years, an Antardasha within it for a few years, and a Pratyantardasha within that for months. The planet running a period sets the theme of that phase.

It depends entirely on the planet. Each graha rules certain life areas and signifies certain qualities, so a period can be demanding in one part of life and unusually generous in another. A dasha reading explains which is which for you, so the demanding part can be planned for and the open door can be used.

A window rather than a guarantee — which is the honest limit of the method. Dasha establishes the period in which an event becomes possible, and KP narrows that down considerably. What you get is a range to plan around, which is usually what is needed to make a decision well.

Because a change of period often arrives as a period of adjustment. Knowing it is coming — and knowing what the new period governs — means you can prepare rather than simply react. It is one of the least dramatic and most useful parts of a dasha reading.

Your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. The Moon's position at birth determines where the dasha sequence begins, so the birth time has to be as accurate as you can make it. If it is uncertain, say so and the reading will work with what can be relied upon.

Where dasha reading goes

Three levels, read together

Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha are never read separately. The longest period sets the theme, the middle one modifies it, and the shortest one is where most concrete events actually land — which is why the reading focuses on the level that is running now.

Windows, not promises

A launch date, a wedding window, a property purchase, an offer with a deadline. Dasha establishes the period, KP narrows it, and what you leave with is a range you can plan around rather than a date to wait for.

A period best left for patience

Some of the most useful guidance is about what not to start. Knowing the current period, the running Antardasha and the months best left alone is often worth more than a favourable date — and it is delivered as a working document, not a reading.
